The S.E.L.F. 4 HealthTM Model: A Proactive Health Model for Optimal Health and Wellbeing
Abstract
Modern healthcare systems largely operate within a reactive “sick care” model focused on diagnosing and treating disease after its onset rather than preventing underlying causes. Although critical for acute management, this approach offers little impact on the worldwide increase in chronic diseases and escalating healthcare expenditure. In contrast, proactive healthcare emphasises prevention, early intervention, and sustainable lifestyle modification. The S.E.L.F 4 Health™ Model presents a holistic, evidence-informed approach based on four pillars: Sleep, Exercise, Lifestyle, and Food. This initiative endeavors to improve physical and mental health, lower the incidence of noncommunicable diseases, and bolster long-term health resilience through modifications in behaviour and environment. Integration of this framework into healthcare systems could foster a shift towards preventative and sustainable healthcare.
